Guestbook for Exmoor Photography

On the suggestion of my friend Peter we booked the Full Day Landscape photography course. We each have a digital 'bridge' camera but of different makes. My camera, a Canon Power Shot SX50 HS, had been set to Auto ever since I bought it some four yeras ago and I really hadn't a clue about all the other facilities that the camera offers and even less about their functions. In reviewing the course and my experience, I wish to reiterate what the attendees of the same course have written below and therefore respectfully advise that you take time to read a few. In short, I found it to be an excellent course and very well organised. Jack and Jamie, our tutors for the day, were both very informative and took both Peter and myself through each stage of the course using, as an aid, a very well designed and structured 34 page laminated A5 sized guidebook (which you get to keep) whilst using our own camera. The lunch provided by Jack's wife Alison is both excellent and generous and there is a good supply of tea, coffee, water, homemade flapjacks and muffins throughout the day. Alison is also responsible for the course booking and all associated administration a role for which she has to be comended. The three locations on Exmoor that we went to are chosen specifically to meet the required learning in line with the course which which, is clever as you get to witness what you can achieve with your very own camera. Nothing on the course is purely theoretical or hypothetical but it is certainly........practical.
It has to be pointed out how reasonable Exmoor Photography is and what excellent service they provide their clients. Firstly, you don't feel like client you feel like a friend who needs a bit of practicable help and it is literally "welcome to our home" when you first meet Jack, Alison and Jamie. On the day that Peter and I attended our course it rained so Jack decided to terminate the day and reappoint for the following week stating that the structure of the course requires a full day for the benefit of the client . Disappointing?.....not at all. We paid a small donation, suggested by Jack, to cover the days overheads - fuel, food, drinks which was fair and I got a couple or so hours sort of free tuition.
What great company Jack and Jamie are. Knowledgeable, patient, understanding and friendly.
Would I go on another Exmoor Photography course? - Yes
Oh, just to mention that I don't use 'Auto' on my camera any more......except for emergencies....now, how good is that.

A few days ago I booked the Full Day Course, and it has been a great experience! First of all, Jack is a genuinely nice person, who really (and only) cares about his customer’s experience. He makes you feel comfortable right away, and quickly assesses you current skillset and expectations. The preparation and run-up to the course are very well organized, but – fear not – the course is still tailored to the specific needs and circumstances, in order to maximize its value for everyone. Jack’s and Jamie’s teaching skills, patience and passion do the rest.
Personally, I had a decent knowledge of my camera and photography principles, but the amount of new things I learned that single day largely exceeded my expectations. Jack not only explains the theory, he also knows how to turn it into reality with *my* camera, using real-life examples. The perfect recipe to make new knowledge “stick”. Actually, Jack knew the ins and outs of my camera very well, including the features that make it unique. No small feat, considering the number of cameras around!
Exmoor is such a wonderful environment that has it all: small towns, a huge variation in landscapes and wildlife. Although I made huge steps, I have a feeling we only scratched the surface and there’s a lot more I could learn from Jack (and Jamie). I could easily spend another few days with them on (more than) a few topics!

Kingfisher Special Photography day
I had already completed the Landscape photography day some time ago, so I already felt comfortable that I would receive excellent tuition in a friendly atmosphere. The Kingfisher special day totally exceeded my expectations.
After an early start I was driven to a stunning location. Every effort had been made to ensure that we were as comfortable as possible in the hide. Tea and wonderful homemade flapjacks (thanks to his lovely wife, Alison) in plentiful supply. It was a one to one day, and Jack's knowledge of my own particular camera and photography in general is just fantastic. Coupled with his friendly patient, genuine style of teaching I learnt so much on the day.
I felt that Jack really cared that I managed to achieve the best shots I have ever taken that day without impacting the wildlife negatively . His ethical approach to the wildlife is refreshing and something I will carry with me in my hobby as well as the technical knowledge he passed on. He is very much a "positive feedback" sort of a coach - great if you lack confidence or feel a bit out of your depth with all those technical terms.
I'll certainly be back for another course.

A long day but worth every minute. I can’t get enough of photography....more than a hobby. The course took me back to fundamentals. Easy to get into a rut by thinking I’d tried most things, prior to the course. There’s more on offer from my camera than I thought. Plus, Jack asks other participants to show and critique on his Facebook page. Scenery tremendous.
