Dunster Castle Workshops:
We are delighted that the National Trust has chosen us again to run these workshops and I can’t wait to introduce new customers to what is the wonderful world of photography. We met some lovely people last year and thoroughly enjoyed running them. These workshops are a great addition to the portfolio we now offer, the Castle and gardens really do offer a spectacular backdrop for many stunning and varied photographic opportunities. These include beautifully kept gardens, pretty bridges over the idyllic River Avil and a working water mill. The intimate group numbers will enable us to continue to provide a professional, friendly, relaxed and hopefully fun learning environment for each of our customers. This proven formula is very important to me.

Dunster Castle out door photography workshop
Another lovely day at Dunster Castle on Monday. We were again blessed with perfect weather. We had four gentlemen this time who were all great fun and company, they even laughed at some of my jokes. We had four very different cameras all of which I knew well (part of my job). All the guest were of a similar level knowledge wise (complete beginners to some experience), which is great but we can flexible with any level.

Anyway enough from me I have included some reviews from Mondays guests:

‘Richard Dick Ashdown recommends Exmoor Photography Nature & Wildlife Images by Jack Clegg: "Attended Dunster castle workshop 20/5/19 as a complete novice with my Nikon D3100 came away feeling 100% more confident. Jack & Jamie so informative and passionate definitely rubbed off on me I can’t wait to get out with my camera now. Nothing was too much trouble both took the time to explain different changes to the camera and why resulting in great photos lovely location and great little places to get some great photos. Lunch was lovely at the mill tea room and Alison’s flapjack was lovely too. Definitely recommend one of these workshops if you want to get to know your camera better/get off auto/and take some great photos. Well done guys 10/10"

Hello Jack

Thank you very much for an interesting, instructional and informative workshop conducted by you , Jamie and assistance from Alison too.

I am very grateful to you for helping me to understand some of the functions built in to my camera and how their use can enhance even my simple attempts. I will take my camera with me on some walks and set aside time to take photographs when I come across interesting views, plants and even try to take wild life.

I enjoyed the day, learnt a lot and certainly will try and do the right things when using my camera.

Many thanks to you all for your patience with a complete novice.

Best wishes

Kind regards

Michael

Dunster Castle out door photography workshop

We have completed several of the new workshops at Dunster castle now in partnership with the National Trust. We have had lovely guest and it has been a pleasure as always helping them with their photography.

Mondays workshops last week was no exception. We were blessed with perfect weather, lovely guest who were great fun and company. The castle grounds really are looking amazing at the moment. I must also mention how friendly, polite and welcoming all the NT staff have been and also the delicious lunch they provide at the Mill tea rooms for us. Another successful day and I am really looking forward to the next one.

I have included a couple of the reviews received from the Dunster Castle workshop guest (with their permission) below.

‘Hi Jack & Alison

Thank you for your email with the information on the lenses and tripods. I apologise for the late reply, I've had a busy week and haven't had a chance to catch up on my emails.

I wanted to thank you both and Jamie for a great day on Monday, It was a really lovely group and you all made us feel so at ease. I learnt a lot and have taken my camera out of it's bag more this weekend than I have for a long time.

If I am going to buy a new camera or lens I will take you up on your kind offer of advice.

Thanks again

Ali’

‘Hello Jack

Thank you for your email, I really enjoyed the day spent at Dunster Castle with you and your team.  Every time I take my dog for a walk my camera goes with us now, just practising the techniques and set ups that was shown to us. I wish I knew this information before I travelled abroad on safari, I still have good photos, but feel they will be better next time!’

Anyway, thanks again for the day.

Regards

Norman

Red Deer In Velvet on Exmoor 2017 https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/8/red-deer-in-velvet-on-exmoor-2017

I had an unexpected day off this week. So I got up at silly o'clock (still dark) and headed off over the moors, what a brilliant day! Managed to stalk a stunning group of Red Deer Stags in full velvet. They were already trying to rub it off while I was watching them. Spent 5 hours on them, got completely soaked and cold, it is August right? One thing that I have really noticed this year is that there are lots of stags with really big heads this season. I am really looking forward to the Red Deer rut in October, one of favourite times of the year. Looks like its going to be a really good one. We are running our Red Deer Rut Specials again this year here at Exmoor Photography. Please don't leave it to late to book yours they are always very popular and we have limited spaces available. Hope you enjoy the images, Jack owner Exmoor Photography.

Exmoor Photography Red Deer Rut Special blog 2016 https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2016/11/exmoor-photography-red-deer-rut-special-blog-2016 Exmoor Photography Red Deer Rut Special blog 2016

Another great rut season done and dusted (almost), it has really flown by this October. I can’t believe it’s nearly all over. I always look forward to it so much and then it’s all over before you know it.

We have shared some wonderful moments sharing this annual spectacle with our customers this season and even managed to avoid all the ‘crowds’ at the weekends (we run the Red deer rut courses on weekdays only). It’s also been great to see and catch up with some of the regular deer watchers that we see every October.

I personally feel it has been one of the best seasons ever, many lovely new and returning stags to photograph, good weather and great customers who did exactly what we asked of them during the stalks. Thus, giving everyone the opportunity to take plenty of superb images, without disturbing the deer or anyone else.  It makes such a difference when you have the right equipment including the right lens and camouflage clothing. It also helps a bit that Jamie and I know what we are doing and have years of local knowledge LOL. Talking of Jamie what would we do without him, fantastic stalking as always and great company. Although I have been stalking deer for over 35 years now, unfortunately since my accident in 2001, my body doesn’t work as quickly as it used to. Therefore, Jamie’s understanding of the deer and my advice makes for a great team effort.  I cannot forget to mention Alison who not only does most of the bookings and customers communications but also prepares lunches and cakes for every course. Thanks ‘team’ you have been brilliant as always. We could all probably do with a rest now, but we go straight back to our other course types including landscapes in November.  The autumn colours are looking phenomenal this year so I can’t wait to start. We still have spaces available if you want to book or know anyone that may be interested in seeing Exmoor’s autumnal spectacle.

The Red Deer Rut photography courses have become so popular now that we had to turn away a few people this year as we were fully booked by August. I hate doing this but we only do the Red Deer Ruts during the peak weeks of the season. We are all about photographing the rut season itself and obviously the photography course.  We run other wildlife themed photography courses during the year if you are unable to make the rut. Please look at the website for more info. Alison has already taken some bookings for next season rut (2017).

Just one of our reviews from ‘Bob’ who attended this years Red Deer Rut Photography Course with us here at Exmoor Photography. All customer reviews can be found on trip advisor & on the website.

“I spent a day with Jack & Jamie photographing Red Deer stags on Exmoor. It was a fantastic day - I learned so much about my camera, Red Deer stalking and about the deer themselves. Jack & Jamie have a superb customer- oriented approach that's relaxed, friendly, informal and yet very professional. I particularly like the fact that they encourage and practice an ethos that's very respectful of the wild deer - we left the deer where they were after a stalk I.e. They weren't disturbed in any way! Also, if anyone else was "on" a stag they'd move away to another area - respecting both other photographers and the stags. The food and drink supplied was plentiful and excellent quality too. I should also mention that the aim of the day was fully achieved in that I got some great images of the stags. I'd high recommend Exmoor Photography and will definitely plan to attend other courses run by Jack.”

We have reached a small but never the less important milestone today.

50 photography course reviews on Trip Advisor (49 excellent!) & 158 reviews on the website.

Every single one of our customer reviews means so much to me personally and I know Alison and Jamie as well. They are a great indication that we are ‘getting it right’ from the booking stage completed by Alison (and lunches) to Jamie and myself on the course days. I am constantly reviewing the service we provide here at Exmoor Photography and always looking for ways to improve our already popular customer experience.

Of course none of this is possible without our loyal customers booking in the first place, new or returning customers alike it’s is my passion and pleasure helping you with your photography and sharing the delights that Exmoor National Park has to offer. We have also noticed an increase this year not only with our UK customers but also with bookings from overseas visitors as well.

Please except a massive THANK YOU from me (Jack) Alison and Jamie. You have all made this year’s photography courses one of the busiest, most memorable and enjoyable to date. It is not always easy running a small business on Exmoor and West Somerset but we do have a fantastic office!

We are having a short break from courses this week (still in the shop) but we are ready to go with the Exmoor Photography Red Deer Rut Specials that start next week, one of my favourite times of the year. Please note that we have limited the number of RDR courses we are running this season; however, there is still three spaces available now.

Just a quick blog this month, we have been very busy with the 3-hour workshops and standard landscape courses throughout July. Superb weather, although the rivers are running very low and are showing rocks that we would not normally see we have got some interesting new views from them. Most of the courses we run in July are landscape based but we have had some excellent wildlife moments during the exclusive 1to1 courses we run where wildlife has been requested to allow customers to learn and practice some action photography.

Our customers including, Australian, Dutch, Swiss and Spanish (new and returning) as always, have been brilliant fun and very hard working resulting in some great photography. It has been a real pleasure to show visitors from further afield the stunning landscape and wildlife that Exmoor has to offer.

A reminder to all our customers who have been on a course that you can join our Facebook forum and share your photography , ask questions and see other course members images. Please note this is a closed forum for our course customers only.

Phew! What a month, fully booked this year, mainly Standard Landscapes courses, some 3hr workshops and RSPB Ham Wall Specials. The month has been one of the most enjoyable since we started the courses. The weather has been good and we have shared some terrific wildlife and landscapes moments with our customers. All have been excellent company as always and very keen to learn, ranging from complete beginners to more competent experienced photographers. There has been an eclectic mix of cameras this month, lots of Canon and Nikons with some Panasonics, Fuji’s, Sony and even a Pentax. I have yet to come across a camera that I have not seen or used before, which makes showing customers their menus and settings much easier for me.

The flying Bee challenge we set at the end of the landscape course during the macro (close up) session has been great fun. It is amazing what our customers have managed to capture, even without a camera that can shoot at 10 FPS (frames per second)!

Exmoor is looking stunning as always, everything looks very green and lush. Giving us great landscape opportunities. The heather is also just starting to flower in places, should  look spectacular again this year.

I can’t believe how many breeding birds we have found this year and how long the season has been, we know that some of the birds we watch are on their third broods! We have regularly seen and photographed Dippers, Spotted Fly Catchers, Buzzards, all the Tits, Cuckoos, Meadow Pipits, Reed Buntings, most of the Warblers, Wheatears, Woodpeckers and a Peregrine almost taking a Pigeon, to name just a few!

To all our customers who have found the time to write reviews about their experience with us here at Exmoor Photography, please except our heartfelt thanks, from Jack, Jamie and Alison. They are always very much appreciated. We now have well over 100 reviews (click here).

We have also found some of our regular visiting Stags during the Red Deer Rut in October, which are well into their velvet growth now and looking huge!

Finally, don’t forget if you are thinking of booking the ever popular Red Deer Rut Specials in October this year, please don’t leave it to late as we only have 4 completely clear days available as of today.

Really looking forward to the rest of the year.

Well, what a great month on Exmoor May has been this year. We have had some great weather and shared some amazing moments on the course with lots of new and some returning customers. We have seen and customers have photographed some amazing wildlife at RSPB Ham Wall nature reserve including, Hobbies, Marsh Harriers, Bittern, Whitethroat, Cettis Warbler, and Willow Warbler and even an Otter mum and her cub! The Glossy Ibis has also showed well for us on several occasions.

With everything springing to life, the patchwork of new growth has made for some lovely landscapes on the Landscapes Courses. The low water level at Watersmeet has given us the opportunity to capture some unusual views of this stunning location.

New-born Exmoor Pony Foals are appearing all over Exmoor now and always offer a lovely photo opportunity.

Perhaps the highlight of the month for me has been the start of our Cuckoo and Moorland bird special photography courses. The first few days proved hard work given that they were a little late in arriving this year. However, both the males and females are here in good numbers now. We can put you in the right place for Cuckoos but obviously can’t control their appearances! However, our perseverance has paid off and during the second week, customers have achieved some of the best Cuckoo images we have ever seen!

We have also found a very active Great Spot Woodpecker nest this year, which have been fun and interesting to photograph.

May this year has been one of the best we have had since the courses started (this is the sixth season). All our customers have worked hard during their courses with us and been terrific company, we have been able to show them our fantastic wildlife and landscape that Exmoor, and Somerset has to offer.

Finally, don’t forget if you are thinking of booking the ever popular Red Deer Rut Specials in October this year, please don’t leave it to late as we only have 5 completely clear days available as of today.

KINGFISHERS https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2016/5/kingfishers Lovely spread in the latest issue of Exmoor Country Magazine, my favourite local magazine. This is image of the three Kingfishers is one of my favourite Kingfisher images. It was certainly the most exciting when I captured it. They suddenly appeared in front of the hide, squabbled over the fish for literally seconds and then were gone. Definitely made the all  hours and very early mornings I spent in the hide that spring worth it. Jack owner Exmoor Photography

Well it looks like spring has finally sprung this week with a lot of budding tress now bursting into life. We have had a very busy month of course during April, mostly standard landscape courses but we have also had some amazing visits to RSPB Ham Wall nature reserve. In fact, our last visit was only last week and the reserve definitely feels very spring like. Lots of bird song from the hedgerows. And love is definitely in the air with lots of birds seen mating.

Whitethroat EP9208AWhitethroat EP9208A

Our customer last Monday was even lucky enough to see and photograph a Glossy Ibis! Many thanks to Colin Brewer for this fantastic image. Colin is a regular on our courses and is quickly becoming one of our most accomplished wildlife photographers. Colin and his lovely wife Pauline have become good friends and I am extremely proud to have played my small part in helping him with his photography.

And I saw my first Hobbies of the season.

Although the landscape course is of course all about landscapes, we have also had some great fun photographing Dippers feeding their young.

Not many Exmoor Pony foals yet but the Longhorn cattle calves are very photogenic. (Be careful not get to get to close and definitely don’t get between mum and calf!)

We have had a great start to this year’s photography courses. Jacks new updated course notes (with new quick guide) that every customer now receives have gone down very well. We have had a mixture of some complete beginners and more competent photographers on the standard landscape courses. The RSPB Ham Wall Special courses have been very popular so far this year.

(please click on any of the below images thumbnails to view larger)

If fact, on my last visit this week I saw and photographed, Great Crested Grebes dancing and weeding several times from the Avalon Hide. In addition, Marsh Harriers, Bittern, Sparrow Hawk, Ring Necked Duck, Teal, Widgeon, Pochard and other duck, mating swans, Long-Tailed Tits nesting, Gold Crest, Bullfinch, Chiffchaff, Great White Egrets and little Egrets and Roe Deer. I also briefly heard my nemesis, Bearded Tits! The mating Swans were fascinating to see. They moved together into the reeds and began their courting ritual. With their necks entwined, they made a very low murmuring noise and they were constantly ‘necking’ each other. It was all very gentle and almost felt like it was in slow motion.

SWAN EP8458ASWAN EP8458A

The Great-crested Grebes were amazing during my visit. I have photographed them dancing and weeding before over the years. However, this pair at the Avalon hide must have weeded at least a dozen times while I was there and often very close to the hide. I love the call they make when they are out of sight of each other.  To get a lower perspective / angle at this hide you can stand quietly on the ground floor and use the holes in the wooden screens.

The Long-tailed Tits were nest building when I found them. When you consider how deep inside the hedge they were, I am very impressed that the camera I was using (Canon 7D MKII) managed to achieve autofocus given the small target and all the ‘clutter’ around it. The central cross type focus point on this camera covers a very small area, ideal for photographing subjects like this. Until fairly recently, this simply would not have been possible to use autofocus on and I would have had to manual focus. If I’m honest, none of my Nikons has such a small central focus point, therefore in similar situations I have to focus on something roughly the same distance away, use focus lock and sometimes increase my DOF (depth of field). This can be a pain particularly if your subject is moving about. Perhaps the new Nikon D500 will have a nice small central focus point. Apart from this one thing, I must admit that there is very little between the D7100, D7200 AND D4 focus ability wise when compared to the Canon, which is very, very quick indeed! And I have used all extensively.

What a fantastic day I had on the reserve, it was just one of those days when everything fell in my lap. I photographed the Bullfinches and Goldcrest in the carpark just before I left!

PS Not much snow this winter on Exmoor but I did manage to get out when we did. The steam train was taken during the recent steam gala on the West Somerset Railway. Damn it Jamie you have turned me into a train spotter (again) Lol! This shot with its ‘bolt’ of steam made everyone jump including me! We found the huge stag herd during a landscape course, which was an amazing sight and it would have been rude not to stop.

RED DEER STAGS https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2016/1/red-deer-stags

It took me ages to stalk these boys, in sub-zero temperature and fog banks coming and going. Stags will form herds at this time of year, but I don’t see them huddle up as close as these were very often. The one in the middle only put his head up for a minute and then went back to sleep. The other two stood and posed for a minute and then sat back down again. I have been after them for ages so was I chuffed or what!

Latest News
What a terrific couple of months it has been since our last newsletter. Stunning weather, new locations, new and returning customers who have been great company and a pleasure to share our photographic knowledge with. I have learnt a thing or too as well, it is always fascinating to meet customers that are as passionate as Jamie and I are about photography on other subjects (not always photographic) that are of interest to them.

The new RSPB Ham Wall specials we have introduced this spring are proving popular. Well done Alison for sorting out everything with the RSPB team at Ham Wall. Special thanks to Steve (warden) & John for all your support and advice. We have shared some terrific moments with our guests. Some of whom were keen to see Bitterns on the reserve. All did I am delighted to say. The reserve is a great place to get to grips with action/flight photography. I have been extremely impressed with the images our guest have been able to achieve, particularly significant when you consider that some of our guest have never successfully done this before. It does take practice and hard work so well done everybody. We have also been able to show guest some stunning landscape views and some interesting macro/close up images.

 3 HOUR WORKSHOP
We have been thinking about introducing these 3 hour taster workshops since early last year. As we are often asked by customers who have bought new cameras (not from us) for advice on how to use them. In fact it was one of our customers who gave me the idea. I also think they will be a fun way of introducing our customers to the basics of digital photography. They are not designed to be like the all-encompassing courses we already offer but simply offer a few useful tips to give you the confidence to take your camera of auto and experiment!

TRIP ADVISOR
Well, we have finally decided to take the plunge and register Exmoor Photography Courses on Trip Advisor. Alison, Jamie and I are always very thrilled when our course customers take the time to write a review of their experience with us here at Exmoor Photography. Many thanks to everyone who has already reviewed us on Trip Advisor.

VANGUARD TRIPODS, CAMERA BAGS  BINOCULARS – AMBASSADOR
I am delighted to have been chosen by Vanguard UK to be an ambassador for them. We are using their products now on the courses and I use a tripod, camera bag and binoculars from their range. I am extremely impressed with all three. In my opinion they all offer good value for money, are well made, extremely versatile and none are showing any signs of wear after over 6 months of continuous use. I have already posted some reviews of the kit I am using. Please use the following link to read them. As a small independent business, Alison and I have been really impressed by Vanguards help, support and advice with their range. Our thanks to Kris and Oddny from the Vanguard team. We feel completely confident with products and service, which in turn,
90- allows us to pass on this confidence to our customers. VANGUARD REVIEWS

OPEN EVENING – Still trying to get various company representatives together on the same date, which is proving difficult due to holidays etc. looking like it will possibly be late August or September now. Please watch this space.

PERSONAL MESSAGE- We have been trading in the beautiful village of Porlock for nearly 5 years now and online since 2001. I could not run the business without my wonderful wife of 24 years now Alison, she really is my right hand ‘women’ and ‘the real boss’.  Her attention to detail when booking customers on the courses is terrific. And on the subject of customers, we can’t tell you how much we appreciate our loyal customers. It is not always easy to be competitive in this internet age. However, I believe that what we sometimes (not often) can’t compete with price wise, we more than make up for with our product knowledge and customer service.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Look forward to seeing you soon.
Kind regards

Exmoor Photography Course Blog 22 06 2015 https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2015/6/exmoor-photography-course-blog-22-06-2015 Exmoor Photography Course Blog 20 06 2015

June has been a particularly interesting month because we have visited some of the new venues and course types we have introduced this year, including our first visits to the Somerset Levels RSPB Ham Wall reserve. Alison and I are extremely grateful to Steve and the RSPB staff at Ham Wall for giving us permission to visit the reserve. It is a fantastic place that gives us the opportunity not only to show customers some interesting birds and wildlife such as the Bittern, but it is also a great place to practice and get to grips with things like how to photograph birds in flight. All the customers we have visited the reserve with, have managed to achieve some great results using the techniques and settings we have shown them. Capturing a sharp, correctly exposed etc, image of a bird in flight is not easy, particularly if you are using a new camera and hired lens (very well done Terry, Di & ‘Madge’). It takes a lot of practice and perseverance. I know from my own work that when you ‘nail’ that flight shot of something it’s a real buzz! I appreciate that modern digital SLR’s with good autofocus systems & upto 10 FPS help, but you still have think about the camera settings and the small problem of getting the ‘target’ in frame. You should all be proud of your images and rightly so! Lots more Red Deer calves about now, but PLEASE take care if you spot one, give it plenty of room and if you happen to accidently walk to close, just leave it be, mum won’t be far away and they are always within ‘calling’ distance. We have had some lovely moments (from a safe distance) watching their antics, ‘bouncing’ about and playing with each other.

I have really enjoyed teaching and encouraging customers to flourish with their photography; this is after all is exactly what the courses are all about!

In addition, promoting Exmoor and Somerset in our own small way.

Thanks again everybody for your company on the courses.

Please note if you are planning to do a Red Deer Rut Special in October with us, we currently only have 7 (was 10 at beginning of month) days left available. Don’t forget we have cameras and lenses you can hire for the day, check out the website for more info or as always please contact myself or Alison and we will happily answer any questions and help you plan your visit if required. (As per our T&C’s we do not take professional photographers or businesses on the courses).

LATEST NEWS – New track permits for Red Deer Rut & Wildlife Specials coming soon. We have also set up a Trip Advisor account this month so our course customers can post reviews here, in addition to the reviews page on the website, if they wish to.

I have attached some recent images taken with a new Sigma 150-600mm Sports version we have been trying out this month. The Bittern and Reed Warbler were taken on a recent visit to Ham Wall. I will be posting a review of this lens when I get time to finish it. I have been very impressed so far.

It compares very well to all the L class Canon lenses I have used over the years and my current Nikon’s including the prime 500mm N series (samples attached).

Thank you

These are so important to me as they truly reflect what we are all about from people who have actually completed the course experience with us, no agendas, no opinions by complete strangers who haven’t even done the course, just great honest feedback, thank you!
Thanks again everybody for your company on the courses it’s been a lovely start to the season. Alison, Jamie and of course myself are really looking forward to running the courses this season here at Exmoor Photography. Please note if you are planning to do a Red Deer Rut Special with us we currently only have 10 days left available.

Exmoor Photography Course Another Happy Customer https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2015/4/exmoor-photography-course-another-happy-customer Exmoor Photography Courses have had another busy week with lovely spring sunshine, warm temperatures and  more happy customers, please read Mr Gowers review below.

Rupert (Jack) Clegg Owner Exmoor Photography

Martin Gower(non-registered) 11 04 2015

I had a day on my own and a shared day as it's a 3-4 hour trip to the location and seemed a better way to justify the travel time (from home to Porlock). It also helped ensure that no location was duplicated in the two days. Can I say at the outset what FANTASTIC VALUE FOR MONEY this course is. I have seen other 1-2-1 and group tutoring offered in this price range but usually they are with one instructor and for larger groups. Sometimes these groups have to drive round in convoy - which would have been awful on Exmoor. (Jack's car is both spacious and comfortable in the rear seats)

I don't know how Jack and Jamie provide their Rolls Royce service at this price but it's a wonderful deal packed with learning and locations that provide great opportunities to take memorable pictures. It seems more of a vocation for them - rather than a job.

The booking arrangements were smoothly handled by Alison who ensured I knew what to expect and arranged the lunch - which was more than I could eat. From the start Jack and Jamie were organised so we could set off promptly and arrive at the carefully chosen location to get the best light or avoid the crowds (not always possible at some of the tourist magnets but we managed very well). However there was flexibility built in so that, for example, when we saw a heron wading in a stream we were able to quickly park to enable me to get the photograph.

In the year I have been trying (as a hobby) to improve my photography I have never used auto but had become lazy (doing most of my adjustments in Elements 12) and there were many of my camera functions that I had read about but not used. By lunchtime on day 1 Jack had convinced me of the benefits of getting the picture as good as possible in camera to minimise post processing. Suffice to say that considerable technical ground was covered and had more been attempted I would have suffered information overload. The volume of new information was tailored just right for me.

Then the practicalities of correct composure (regarding the exposure etc as covered above) were first class. I knew about the rule of thirds, leading lines and so forth but didn't always appreciate that there might be better opportunities if I just looked around a bit more and thought about my alternatives. Landscape photography shouldn't be rushed! Setting up a shot myself and then having it constructively analysed was a great learning experience. Plus (what I had thought most important at the time of booking) the knowledge of locations and the time of day they were most likely to be effective. I could not possibly find in two days what these professionals have spent years locating.

I could say more (all positive) but I'll finish with the recommendation that you stop reading and start booking. You will have a fantastic day.

Exmoor Photography Course, Blog Spring 2015 https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2015/4/exmoor-photography-course-blog-spring-2015

The courses have proved popular with both ‘locals’ and visitors during the first 3 months of this year. Alison and I have noticed an increase in ‘local’ people booking the course at this time of year and your support during the ‘off’ season is very much appreciated. I always maintain that Exmoor and West Somerset has loads to offer during the winter months and it has always been one of my favourite times of the year for landscape photography.  Yes, it can be a bit wet and cold at times but we have had some lovely winter sunshine as well, which on clear days gives a beautifully ‘soft’ light for landscape photography on Exmoor.

We had a great day’s photography course with returning customers father and son Neil and Michael this week. They were one of our first ever customers when we first started the courses. It was great to see them again and I did another detour during the day (for Michaels birthday) to find some Red Deer, which we did. Their first course was memorable because I took them out again at the end of the landscape course day to look for some Red Deer for Michael. We nearly tripped over one of our biggest local stags in full velvet on the way back to the shop! We visited some old favourites and some new location to brush up on their photography skills. I was pleased to see that they were both using manual modes on their cameras! Malmsmead was looking particularly resplendent with spring Daffodils in full bloom adding some colour to an already pretty location for landscape photography.

Our standard landscape photography courses are booking well now for the spring / summer season and we still have some spaces left for our ‘specials’ to book yours please contact Jack or Alison on the following number and visit the website for more information.

Diana Aldwinkle’s lovely shot of one of the biggest stags found during this years Red Deer Rut on Exmoor. Charles liked the pose, the grouping and the colours that are often found on Exmoor in October. Alison and I are very grateful to Charles for the time he took to choose the winners and runners up. I don’t think he found it easy to decide as the standard of entries was extremely high. Well done to the Bob Davies who Charles awarded second place and Gwyneth Waddington who he gave third place.

I would like to thank everyone for your entries we received nearly 30! You should all be very proud of yourselves as there wasn’t one I didn’t like. You are all winners in my opinion. I meet many people that don’t even see our Red Deer let alone take good photos of them. I am so glad I did not have to choose the winners!

Fog, wind, rain, sunshine and lots of great Red Deer photography, in the stunning surroundings of Exmoor, what more could you want; I love my ‘office’!

We have had another fantastic Red Deer Rut Special Photography Course season here at Exmoor Photography. They ‘officially’ finished for us today, Friday 31 10 2014 (we do have some more booked for early N ovember). Today has been a brilliant end to a very busy month. We had perfect weather, some lovely stags to photograph and great company, in the form of Caz, who worked extremely hard on improving her photography and stalked the deer like a real pro, she listened to all the advice I imparted to her and got some stunning shots, something that particularly impressed me, considering Caz had hired one of our ‘big’ lenses and monopod, which she was using for the very first time. Great work Caz, Jamie and I are so pleased you enjoyed your day, we did too. Please don’t get jealous everyone who has also done the course this month LOL, you all know how grateful and impressed myself and Jamie have been with all your achievements and images , but she really was ‘gold star’ pupil today! LOL

This week has been a bit frustrating at times due to the weather, obviously, something I have no control over, but with patience all round, we eventually got some stalks in and some terrific photographs. In fact for the whole month we have only had to postpone one course and split another into two half days, which although not ideal has satisfied my customers. Thanks everybody for your company this week, well done Bob, Jamie and myself were impressed by your stamina! Thanks Tim for review, they are always much appreciated. Special thanks to Peter and Aneka for ‘splitting’ your day. Well done David and Roy for getting any photographs at all given the difficult lighting conditions and some fog!

Jamie and myself as always have meticulously planned the month and by working closely together before, during and after the stalks have not knowingly disturbed any deer unnecessarily or other photographers, my 2 golden rules.

It has been an absolute pleasure for me to share some memorable moments with new and returning customers during this month’s Red Deer Rut specials, some of whom had until now never seen wild Red Deer Stags let alone photographed them. This year once again, every customer who has attended the course with us has, left with their own photographs of wild Red Deer stags and I hope some special memories of their day.

My thanks to Steve and Anne of the Whortleberry Tea Rooms in Porlock, for supplying the lunches, which were delicious. Thank you Alison my lovely wife for making all the flasks, cakes and of course FLAPJACKS! It will be nice not be getting up at 5.00 am every morning.  And, last but by no means least my thanks to Jamie, who has worked tirelessly stalking the deer this month with our customers, while putting up with my ‘chatter’ on the radios! I think I helped occasionally! Well done mate I know everybody has appreciated your company.

The rut season seems to have flown past this year and I am already looking forward to next years Red Deer Rut Specials here at Exmoor Photography. The Rut season is one my favourites on Exmoor but I am now looking forward to starting the Standard Landscape courses again next week which we suspend during October.

Thanks again everybody, happy days, hope to see you next year.

RED DEER RUT OCTOBER 2014 - BLOG 3 https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2014/10/red-deer-rut-october-2014---blog-3 RED DEER RUT OCTOBER 2014 - BLOG 3
Another busy week, here at Exmoor Photography. We were fully booked again this week and we have once again experienced some great moments with our customers, who have all taken some cracking images. Despite being up against it at times with the weather, we have persevered and managed to satisfy everyone. We were buffeted by the strong winds at the beginning of the week, therefore, I was very impressed that Ian, Francis, Bob & Tina managed t...o get any shots at all, well-done guys. I know I have said it before, but all customers this week have again worked extremely hard with Jamie and listened to our directions and advice, in some conditions, that at times have not been conducive for photography. The dreaded Exmoor fog has been our main problem this week. It has remained quite mild though, and we have only had the hand warmers out once so far, so it could have been much worse. I think that Jamie has walked an average 3 to 5 miles per day during the stalks. Almost all of which have been successful, after all they are wild animals so it doesn’t always go to plan, but I reckon a ‘hit’ rate of 95% + is pretty good! We have had a varied assortment of cameras used on the course this week, from a (high-end) compact with 30x optical zoom, some very good bridge cameras to SLR’s. Obviously some are better than others, but I think that all have produced some great results. It has been fascinating seeing the images and comments that customers have posted on the Exmoor Photography Course Customer Forum page (thanks everyone). I think their images speak for themselves and sum up our customer’s achievement’s this week far better than any words I can use here. The camouflage clothing customers have brought with them has been very helpful and the balaclavas and gloves we provide, although not fashion statements (Barbara ) seem to have worked well. Really, well done again everybody, I have again enjoyed meeting new and returning customers. It’s a bit like that lager advert says; I really do feel like I have the best job in the world! I must thank my friend Jamie without whom, I would find it impossible to complete the courses, as a physically restricted person, he literally is my right hand man. My beautiful wife Alison for all the late nights and early mornings making cakes and hot flasks for us.

Wow, what can I say, we have shared some fantastic moments with our customers in the first 2 weeks of this years Red Deer Rut Special. Every customer has successfully taken their own images of Exmoor’s majestic wild Red deer. Jamie has worked extremely hard on the stalks with help from me; we have managed to get all our customers close enough to the deer without disturbing them or interfering with other deer watchers in the process, my two golden rules. The word used by Roger ‘awesome’ when we got back to the shop yesterday, that he made to my wife Alison, was all we needed to hear! Everyone has worked very hard on the course and listened to any advice and photographic tips that we have imparted to them. With, some stunning results. On a personal note, I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting new and returning customers whilst sharing Exmoor’s stunning landscapes and wildlife with them. Jack

We have had a fantastic start to this year’s Red Deer Rut Special photography courses here at Exmoor Photography. Jamie and I managed to find and stalk six different stags on one day with Gwyneth & Suzanne, who ...both worked really hard and got some fantastic images. As always, our policy of as little or no disturbance and not stalking a stag that someone else is already on was strictly adhered to. The ‘girls’ above, Clive, Chloe, Peter & Tim have all had some great moments, got some fantastic shots and all worked very hard during the stalks with Jamie, some of which have had the added frustration of strong winds and some rain. However, we have been extremely lucky with the weather so far. Looking forward to a busy couple of weeks introducing our customer to the wonderful Red Deer and landscapes that Exmoor has to offer. one very early morning on exmoor https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2014/7/one-very-early-morning-on-exmoor

Wow!!! What an amazing couple of days 'out' I had last week, both very early starts, woke up at silly o’clock (3.30 am) well actually left the house at 4.30 am when my body bought up with my enthusiasm!

First morning spent on Exmoor, where I found these 3 stunning Red Deer Stags in full 'velvet' the images taken at 5.30 am, then I watched a beautiful Red Kite for about 20mins, next I drove round another corner and found an adult Great spotted woodpecker being mobbed by 3 very mature juveniles, that were eventually rewarded with food. They were so engrossed in what they were doing that they completely ignored my presents. Then I noticed this Exmoor Pony foal with a ‘perm’ got wet and gone curly.  The icing on the cake for me was finding this gorgeous Red Deer calf, which was still a bit 'wobbly' on its legs. Mum was with it though so I kept my distance, managed to get some photos, but most importantly did not disturb them. I often see Red Deer calf’s at this time of year that appear to be alone, but they never are mum is never far away. Simply stunning weather, terrific wildlife, what a brilliant place Exmoor is!

Second morning, another ridiculously early start, but I was rewarded with these great views of a Little Bittern and its bigger cousin the Great Bittern - HAPPY DAYS!

Hope you like the images

DIPPER DIARY JUNE 2014 https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2014/6/dipper-diary-june-2014 DIPPER DIARY MAY / JUNE 2014

I have found a completely new Dippers nest this year at Watersmeet. I think it  was the adult birds first breeding season and was very surprised at where they had built the nest, considering the amount of human ‘traffic’ walking by, (without realising it was there). The nest build took about 5 days from start to finish! This was followed by a period of relative inactivity while the parents took turns to ‘sit’ only changing about every 2 hours or so.

On the 16th May, the chicks had obviously hatched as the adults were kept very busy bringing in food for them. At times, they were coming in every minute with an assortment of insects, larva and the occasional juicy caterpillar! The adult’s activity would stop most days between 1.00 & 2.00 pm to have rest. I regularly had one of them sat right in front of me, on rock struggling to stay awake. This pattern continued for about 2 weeks; however, I then noticed that the male adult only made an appearance in the early morning and late evening, only occasionally bringing in food for the chicks. Much to the annoyance of mum, who more than once attacked him for doing so, they actually ended up beak to beak on more than one occasion and fell into the river. I have not witnessed this reaction before between parent birds and I did wonder if perhaps she thought he was an intruder. As there was another nest nearby further upstream and they are territorial. It was definitely ‘her’ mate though as he had a prominent mark on his otherwise white breast plumage.

After 3 weeks, I could now clearly hear the chicks calling for food and leaning out of the nest when the parents arrived. The adults could no longer enter the nest but instead hovered at the entrance to pass the food.

At 20 days, the adult would often sit outside the nest, apparently calling the chicks, perhaps to fledge. It was on one of these occasions that I listened to an adult ‘sing’ in the early morning for about an hour. I have never heard this before and it sounded very similar to a male Blackbird.

By day 23 mum was starting to look a bit jaded not the usual pristine plumage that Dippers keep themselves. On several occasions, one chick made a full appearance nearly falling out of the nest, resulting in a desperate scramble to get back in!  It was on one of these moments that an intruder made an appearance, much to the annoyance of the parent birds, this ended up with 3 Dippers in a mid-air ‘dog fight’ the resident birds eventually saw of the interloper.

On day 27 (quite late not to have fledged, they usually fledge between 21 – 24 days) there was a definite change in activity, the adults had almost stopped feeding runs and both the juveniles were showing well. I now suspected fledging was imminent. So on day 28 I woke up early and arrived at about 5.30 am. Just in time to watch both chicks fledge! I managed to take stills and video of the moment, happy days!

Both chicks looked healthy and well fed, however one was very nervous of its new surroundings at first at took some time to venture away from the nest.  The other however was a lot braver and started to explore the riverbed almost straight away. Already trying to feed itself, but picking dead leaves more often than not. Both chicks have the familiar grey plumage with brownish wing tips and yellowish/white breast at this stage. The adults occasionally kept them fed, which they would normally do for about a week. The more nervous chick eventually got a helping push from one the adults, before making its first flight and crash landing!

I usually have (time permitting) wildlife projects going at different times of the year and have found watching and photographing the Dippers this spring fascinating. I have managed to get all the shots I wanted including the birds in flight! This was not easy considering they often ‘skim’ along the water, not much slower than Kingfishers do.

Exmoor Photography Course
We have had some great moments on the course recently and I have enjoyed meeting new customers and helping them with their photography. The wild flowers, Bluebells etc are spectacular this year and we have managed to see lots of new Exmoor Pony Foals, Dippers, Herons and a Red Kite! Spring has sprung on Exmoor well and truly now and the trees etc are looking fantastic.
To find out more, book your course and read what our customers are saying, please click the following link or you can pop into the shop at Porlock.
Also, Jack & Alison would like to welcome Steve and Anne the new owners of The Whortleberry Tea Rooms to the village and thank them for making the fantastic sandwiches for the course lunch that we provide.

Exmoor Photography Course 21 04 2014 https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2014/4/exmoor-photography-course-21-04-2014 The Exmoor Photography Courses are proving very popular this year, we have had some fantastic weather, it has even been warm enough to have a picnic, at lunch time, on several occasions. Customers on the course have taken some great photos and got to grips with their cameras very quickly. Jack says "it's always great when people come into the shop to visit after the course and tell me they have not used auto since and show me some of the photos they have taken. It is nice to see that we have done what we set out to do and they have left some fantastic reviews about their day with Exmoor Photography."

Exmoor Photography Course https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2014/4/exmoor-photography-course During the Exmoor Photography Course, we regularly visit the stunning location at Watersmeet.
Julie Mawby the National Trust manager at Watersmeet House has been extremely welcoming and helpful in allowing us to do this. To show our apprec...iation of this, we have donated a panoramic landscape canvas of Watersmeet from Jacks
‘Wild Exmoor’ range and had the great pleasure in presenting it to Julie last Sunday. You will be able to see it hanging inside the Tearooms at Watersmeet House. Once again, we would like thank Julie and her staff for their continued support and wish them a very busy season.

Considering the wet weather we have all endured recently, it was a welcome change to wake up to clear skies today.  The weather remained like this for the duration of the course; it was even warm enough to have our first proper picnic of the season at Lynton’s Valley of rocks. Where we had the added bonus of being able to photograph some very cute Goat kids, some of whom were still a bit ‘wobbly’ on the their feet.  The light at Watersmeet was stunning today, with the rivers ‘white horses’ glistening in the sunshine. We even got chance to practice servo mode and panning techniques on some friendly and very brave kayaker’s going down a waterfall. I must stress that both the guys we watched appeared to know what they were doing and both made in down safely. All three of our customers managed to capture some great shots of them.  We finished the course at Dunster today after a visit to Tarr Steps, which was looking fantastic in the early spring Cath and Victor who were all great company and very keen to learn. I was particularly impressed by Kath who borrowed one of Sarah’s cameras for the day. It is never easy using a new and unfamiliar camera, but Kath did really well.  In fact they all deserved a ‘gold star’ LOL for the results they achieved from the day.

  • Exmoor Photography ‘Standard’ Photography course 01 11 2013
  • We did our first ‘standard’ course after the Red Deer Rut yesterday.  The view of Porlock village from Hurlstone Point was looking stunning with the trees just starting to turn and show their glorious autumnal colours.

Watersmeet is running very high and fast from all the rain we had last weekend. The views of the rivers are always great to photograph, but they are looking particularly mesmerising with all the extra water at the moment. We even saw some salmon leaping!

We have had a good season taking our guests on the Exmoor Photography Courses.  I have met some great new customers and really enjoyed showing people how to use their cameras in the beautiful landscape that Exmoor has to offer.  A BIG  thank you all our customers for your support and reviews that some of you have taken the time to write. They are always very much appreciated by us. I would also like to thank course customers who have sent in their images from their day with us. They are always interesting to see and it is great to see the results people have achieved from the course and with different cameras.

The Red Deer Rut special courses we run in October are booking well and don’t forget the ‘standard’ courses continue again in November.

I will be adding information pages soon, about the new Steam Train Special Photography Course we will be running next year.

A simply stunning day weather wise on Exmoor for yesterday’s Photography Course. Very enthusiastic customers who were a pleasure to have on the course.
I think we all appreciated not having to walk down to Watersmeet in the hot sun! We also managed to squeeze in a couple of extra locations during the course including the Pack horse Bridge at Allerford and the ‘Dream’ gardens at Dunster Castle, which are absolutely stunning and offer a plethora of photographic opportunities, from close up (macro) shots of the beautiful flowers to the architecture that surrounds you. An enjoyable day with some great company. I must have been in a good mood because I treated everyone to an ice cream at Dunster! Really looking forward to the next course.

    Cuckoos https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2013/5/cuckoos Cuckoos

Alison & I had a fantastic ‘day off’ together yesterday, photographing Cuckoos. I have finally got the shots I wanted after 3 weeks of very early mornings! Yesterday was no exception, I was up at 4.00am an in the hide by 5.00am! Alison had a lie in. The early morning mist burnt off very quickly and as it cleared, there was Cuckoo sat right in front of the hide warming itself in the sunshine. I watched it feeding and flying about for the next 3 hours. She was fascinating to watch, I think she is definitely almost ready to lay, the Wheat Ears were going crazy and dive bombing her any time she went near them. I saw 2 or 3 other Cuckoos come and go during the morning, but although she displayed she didn’t really seem interested.  Alison joined me at lunchtime and we had a picnic together, while still watching the Cuckoos, excellent! Alison then did 2 trips back to the car for me with my gear, what would I do without her! My back and legs were killing me.

Photography Course Blog https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2013/5/photography-course-blog Photography Course Monday 20th May

Almost perfect weather for yesterday’s expedition. We decided to follow itinerary 1a with a slight detour to include Lanacre Bridge. So glad we did, Lanacre was looking beautiful and we saw some Dippers and listened to two Cuckoos! This was a real bonus for one of our guests who has never heard one before! The view from Whitestone’s car park overlooking Porlock Bay was great first thing and we even had a perfectly positioned herd of Exmoor Ponies complete with young foals to photograph, playing in the foreground. We also popped down to Nutscale Reservoir and found a nice herd of Red Deer and watched / listened to the Skylarks. The Gorse is in full bloom everywhere and looks great.  Everything is now at last bursting into life, it’s amazing how much greener everything looks in just a week! It was even warm enough to enjoy a picnic at Porlock Weir, complete with high tide to photograph. Watersmeet is looking very photogenic with the ancient woodland showing new growth, Dippers nesting and Wagtails catching insects.

    Exmoor – Why Not!

'We went on Jacks course last Friday and I have learnt things about my camera that I didn’t even know it did! Jack was very patient with me and was happy to show me some things several times. We visited some beautiful places with Jack. I am very pleased with what I have learnt and I even managed to take some pictures I like. Thanks again Jack, we will definitely be recommending your course to family and friends.'
    Mark

Great news, during itinerary 3a when we visit Dunster, Exmoor Photography has been given permission to enter the Deer Park at Dunster Castle, Dunster. I am delighted that we can take you to the Deer Park, because it will offer us a wealth of photographic opportunities at this stunning historic location. We are very grateful to the National Trust staff at Dunster Castle for their support and allowing us to do this.

    SNOW https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2013/1/snow SNOW

Alison and I had a great (but cold) time last Sunday & Monday on Exmoor taking lots of snow scenes,  Exmoor Ponies and Red Deer. I think some sheep got snapped as well. I know the snow is not great news for everyone but for me as a photographer it’s been brilliant! I’ve hardly put the cameras down this week. The snow really came down in Porlock yesterday, it stuck very quickly and meant I had an interesting drive home from the shop!  See the pictures of Porlock High Street and the St Dubricius Church. Can’t believe it was all gone this morning, gutted! Any way hope you enjoy the pictures, I will be updating the website galleries ASAP.

Tarr Steps Flood Damage https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2013/1/tarr-steps-flood-damage TARR STEPS FLOOD DAMAGE

Had a day away from the shop yesterday and after completing a commercial job I spent the rest of the day visiting some of the stunning beauty spots that we have on Exmoor. I managed to get some black & white landscapes images of Lanacre Bridge, Robbers Bridge, Withypool Bridge (one of my favourites on Exmoor) and I popped down to have a look at what was left of Tarr Steps after the flood damage. There must have been a huge volume of water and debris washed down there, as I am told that some of the displaced stones way over 2 tons! Very sad to see such a beautiful spot looking so flood spoiled, I proposed to my beautiful wife Alison there so I have a bit of a soft spot for it. I couldn’t help but think of people who have had their homes flooded, it must be a terrible experience to go through. I will be uploading the new landscapes images onto the website soon.

    Many thanks

Barn Owls, Red Deer Rut & more! https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2012/11/barn-owls-red-deer-rut-more Barn Owls, Red Deer Rut & more!

A lot colder on Exmoor this week in fact I saw my first snowfall yesterday but it didn’t stick. The Red Deer Rut appears to have stopped for now, although it did start up again for a bit at the end of November last year, so you never know. The Rut although shorter this year has been one my best yet despite one very foggy week, got some lovely images of big stags both on the open moor and from my hide, so I’m very happy and can’t wait until next year! Also caught up with some old acquaintances and made some new ones this year, which is always nice. I’ve been seeing some Exmoor Barn Owls most mornings very early just when it’s getting light, which is always a real pleasure. Also been seeing a male Hen Harrier on a regular basis, he is in great condition, but every time I have seen him I have been distracted doing something else so have missed the photograph! I did nearly get him the other day, but some Exmoor Ponies got in the way! I think the shot that was sharp had a pony in front of it, well that’s my excuse anyway! I’ll get him eventually, just have to be patient. Another thing I have noticed is the beautiful colours showing as the trees change this autumn, there is a few locations I have been keeping an eye on waiting for the colours to be right for landscapes. Just need it to stop raining for a bit as well now!

On the shop front, I have decided to stock the Elizabeth Carrington Frame range in store.  I looked at several ranges but decided that these offer very nice quality and are good value for money. I am stocking the following styles and sizes and will increase the range in due course. These frames will fit almost all of my standard mounts and of course, you can buy them for your own cherished pictures as well. They are proving popular with customers already so I’m glad I decided to stock them!

Canvas Wraps Red Deer Stags https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2012/10/canvas-wraps I now have the following images printed onto canvas wraps. I have had them done in Black & White and they 25x25” in size. I am selling them in store as limited additions maximum of five.

They have gone down very well with my customers and I’m rather pleased with them myself!

I hope you like them as well.

It’s been a very frustrating couple of weeks since my last post, I couldn’t see the end of my nose most days last week due to thick fog on Exmoor. On one morning I could hear two stags fighting (their horns clashing) not very far away but I couldn’t see a thing. I have seen some stags close up from one my hides in the mist, which has given the photographs a moody look.

As I type this today Monday 29 10 2012 the sun is shining, but I’m stuck in the shop!

    Thanks

Exmoor Red Deer Rut 2012 https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2012/10/exmoor-red-deer-rut-2012 Red Deer Rut 2012

Well the first 2 weeks of October have already been very busy for me down here on Exmoor. I have been very lucky again this year to photograph this stag (see images). It has meant lots of early mornings and some late evenings, before and after running the shop all day! Nevertheless, as you can see he really is a stunning stag.  I am always completely shattered by the end of the month, but it’s my favourite time of year. I actually heard my first ‘bolving’ stag on the 20th of September. My disability prevents me from ‘stalking’ the deer over any distance myself any more, which is very frustrating! However, I have often had some of my best moments and photographs from one of my hides, and with patience, I have also had some close encounters on the open moor close enough to photograph. It’s always nice to see and catch up with other deer watching lovers who come over to Exmoor to see and hear the rut every year. I have my new images for sale at the gallery in Porlock and online as always.

Looking forward to yet another fantastic Red Deer Rut on Exmoor! Please click on images below to see Gallery

    Thanks

    landscapes https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2012/8/landscapes Hi,

I have been doing some very early mornings before I open the shop recently, trying to take some local landscapes, including Dunster Castle. It has taken me ages and several visits to get the right lighting! I always try to take a popular location from a different perspective if I can. And after lots of walking about the other day, giving myself thumping back ache and scaring the life out of someone walking their dog who hadn’t seen me lying in the grass I think I’ve cracked it. My landscapes are all available at the shop in Porlock in various formats including, mounts, canvas and frames. Sorry I have not had the time to put them on line yet.

    Thanks Jack

Barn Owls https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2012/8/barn-owls EXMOOR PHOTOGRAPHY: Latest Images &emdash; BARN OWLS EP2968AHi,

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better and I thought it was all over! One of the juvenile Barn Owls turned up the other night and called to be fed, he was rewarded with a meal and I managed to get this shot from some distance away with my flash on its absolute maximum range! I didn’t even realise I had this image for about a week until I downloaded the images onto the computer. In fact I nearly cleared the card by mistake because I thought I had already downloaded them – phew!!

    I hope you like it.

    Jack

PS I popped up the other evening to check the Owls they are all doing very well, one is hunting and pretty much fending for himself while the other 2 are still occasionally coming back for a meal from the adults if their lucky.

Great news I have been photographing Barn Owls on Exmoor for the last 2 weeks. Had some fantastic views of recently fledged chicks and adults. Obviously not wanting to disturb them, I waited for them to successfully fledge before trying to photograph them from a safe distance using my 500mm lens. They are all looking very healthy considering all the rain we have had. And they are starting to show signs of hunting for themselves. The parents have done a great job rearing them and are still about. Huge thanks to Miss ‘L’ and family for all your help, kindness and generosity.

Red deer in velvet https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2012/7/red-deer-in-velvet Up very early this morning and was rewarded by finding the stags in velvet again just outside the village. Lucky to spot them in the long grass as I was driving along. They were just the other side of a hedge, which gave me perfect cover to stalk them. Put the 300mm lens on the camera and walked along the hedge until I was just about opposite them, poked my head up and was rewarded with some lovely full frame shots just as the early morning sun hit them. We have nicknamed them 'Tom & Jerry' not sure why but the girls liked it. Nice start to the morning, the rest of which I spent watching and photographing Exmoor ponies and a Red deer calf, brilliant! I will post some new shots of 'Tom & Jerry' tomorrow if I get the chance.

Red deer in velvet https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2012/6/red-deer-in-velvet Got some lovely shots of two good size Red deer in velvet just outside the village over the last month. I don't think there far off losing the velvet though as one of them was rubbing his 'horns' on anything he could find the other day. Love watching then on a summers evening after a busy day at the shop. Alison was with me the other evening and she managed to get some lovely photos herself with the new bridge camera (fuji SL300) I gave her for our wedding anniversary. Yes I actually remembered this year! She loves the camera and finds it really easy to use. I thought after 21 years of being stuck with me I'd spoil her a bit. I did buy her a cuddly toy as well!

Fox cubs https://www.exmoorphotography.co.uk/blog/2012/6/fox-cubs The fox cubs are growing up fast now, sadly of the original 8 I think there is only 4 left now, but that's nature I'm afraid. The cubs left all look very healthy and are showing good hunting skills. Surprisingly I think that the litter runt has survived and is perhaps the still the most adventurous of the four. Whilst the other 3 are becoming more nocturnal with there activity this one is still out and about during daylight hours. I have found him several times 'sunning' himself on my way to the hide.

Recently back from our trip to Mull in Scotland, had a fantastic time, very long days, we were up at 4.30 every morning and worked through until it got dark! The effort paid off though we managed to get shots of everything required including, Pine Martens, Red Deer and White-tailed Eagles. I will never forget the experience of watching the White tails, what amazing birds. With a 2.5m wingspan and you can’t miss them in the sky. This was a first for me and I can’t wait to get back there!
The Mull Sea eagle watch organised by the RSPB was very interesting and a good safe way to see the birds up close. Don’t forget they are a protected species and should under no circumstances be disturbed.
We also had a fantastic, awesome, brilliant afternoon with Martin on his boat The Lady Jayne, Martin and his son made us very welcome and was very helpful with positioning the boat to help us get the best shots. The coffee was also much appreciated. Thanks to Martin, Jane, Katie and I had one the best photographic experiences that I can remember for years.
