Exmoor Photography Course Blog 20 06 2015
June has been a particularly interesting month because we have visited some of the new venues and course types we have introduced this year, including our first visits to the Somerset Levels RSPB Ham Wall reserve. Alison and I are extremely grateful to Steve and the RSPB staff at Ham Wall for giving us permission to visit the reserve. It is a fantastic place that gives us the opportunity not only to show customers some interesting birds and wildlife such as the Bittern, but it is also a great place to practice and get to grips with things like how to photograph birds in flight. All the customers we have visited the reserve with, have managed to achieve some great results using the techniques and settings we have shown them. Capturing a sharp, correctly exposed etc, image of a bird in flight is not easy, particularly if you are using a new camera and hired lens (very well done Terry, Di & ‘Madge’). It takes a lot of practice and perseverance. I know from my own work that when you ‘nail’ that flight shot of something it’s a real buzz! I appreciate that modern digital SLR’s with good autofocus systems & upto 10 FPS help, but you still have think about the camera settings and the small problem of getting the ‘target’ in frame. You should all be proud of your images and rightly so! Lots more Red Deer calves about now, but PLEASE take care if you spot one, give it plenty of room and if you happen to accidently walk to close, just leave it be, mum won’t be far away and they are always within ‘calling’ distance. We have had some lovely moments (from a safe distance) watching their antics, ‘bouncing’ about and playing with each other.
I have really enjoyed teaching and encouraging customers to flourish with their photography; this is after all is exactly what the courses are all about!
In addition, promoting Exmoor and Somerset in our own small way.
Thanks again everybody for your company on the courses.
Please note if you are planning to do a Red Deer Rut Special in October with us, we currently only have 7 (was 10 at beginning of month) days left available. Don’t forget we have cameras and lenses you can hire for the day, check out the website for more info or as always please contact myself or Alison and we will happily answer any questions and help you plan your visit if required. (As per our T&C’s we do not take professional photographers or businesses on the courses).
LATEST NEWS – New track permits for Red Deer Rut & Wildlife Specials coming soon. We have also set up a Trip Advisor account this month so our course customers can post reviews here, in addition to the reviews page on the website, if they wish to.
I have attached some recent images taken with a new Sigma 150-600mm Sports version we have been trying out this month. The Bittern and Reed Warbler were taken on a recent visit to Ham Wall. I will be posting a review of this lens when I get time to finish it. I have been very impressed so far.
It compares very well to all the L class Canon lenses I have used over the years and my current Nikon’s including the prime 500mm N series (samples attached).
Thank you
