Little Owls (Athene noctua):
About 8-9” tall with a wing span of 22”.
Mottled brown and white, narrow brownish face with pale yellow eyes and dark irises.
Has a characteristic, direct, undulating flight. They live in mixed farmland habitat, particularly where there are fruit trees/orchards.
I am really chuffed this week after years of trying to find a good site that is accessible for me, I’ve finally done it. Although it was pouring with rain on this visit, it made for some interesting shots of their behaviour. The owl really seemed to be enjoying the rain it was definitely spreading its wings to capture it and then have a good preen. I felt so very privileged to watch them. I must say a massive thank you to my very good friend Nigel for his company, help and hospitality. I know I have said this before but this simply would not be possible for me now as my disability is getting worse. I must admit the kindness of people overwhelms me sometimes.
Still an ongoing project but I am making the most of any spare time before we start the workshops in June. Stunning little owls (sorry) to watch and photograph (ethically).
